Cherry eye in dogs
Cherry eye is a disorder of nictiating membrane (third eye lid) present in eyes of dogs and cats. It occurs after a tear gland in a dog's third eye lid becomes inflamed. While it is usually not extremely painful, sometimes dog will rub due to itchyness.
Breeds more susceptible for cherry eye condition are cocker spaniels, shih tzu, white terriers, pug, Boston terriers and bull dogs. A dog could also develop cherry eye condition if physical trauma stretched or tore a ligament keeping the gland in place.
Symptoms :
The most common symptoms in dogs are swollen pinkish red membrane in the corner of one of the eye. Dogs may scratch or paw at their eyes, this can also inflict scratches on the cornea or other parts of the eye.
Some other common symptoms include Dry cornea ( due to lack of tear production)
Excessive blinking
Discharges around the eye
Treatment :
Immediately after noticing any change contact the veterinarian. Vetenarian mostly suggests surgery to correct third eye lid in order to prevent dogs from developing dry eye or other eye condition.
