Diarrhoea in dogs
It is a condition of discharging loose faeces by the dogs for morethan 2 times a day, Some times it may be blood or mucus mixed. Diarrhoea may be due to number of reasons. Some of the most common reasons for diarrhoea are
Swallowing a foreign or poisonous agent :
As this leads to release of toxins which causes excessive loss of water from the body.
Parvo viral infection :
In this condition virus binds to rapidly dividing cells of intestine and causes acute enteritis and necrosis of intestinal crypt and villus atrophy.
Excessive food intake :
Due to over feeding of dogs leads to diarrhoea but the condition regains normal with 1 or 2 days.
Colitis :
Almost 1/3rd of dogs with chronic diarrhoea having the condition of colitis ( inflammation of large intestine or colon). As colon helps to maintain balance of fluids andelectrolytes ( sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium etc), inflammation of colon leads to imbalance in fluids and electrolytes leading to diarrhoea condition.
Parasitic infections :
Worm infections like round worms (toxocara canis) , hookworms(dipylidium caninum) , coccidia can leads to diarrhoea in dogs.
Bacterial infections :
Some of the bacterial infections caused by salmonella, E. Coli leada to diarrhoea in dog.
Viral infections :
Some of the viral infections like parvo virus, Canine distemper can leads to diarrhoea in dogs.
Toxins :
Chocolate, onion, raisins if ingested can leads to diarrhoea in dogs.
Systemic illness :
Kidney disfunction, liver disfunction, diabetes mellitus can leads to diarrhoea in dogs.
Diet change :
A sudden diet change can also leads to diarrhoea in dogs.
Diarrhoea can also be differentiated into small intestine and large intestine diarrhoea based on the type of faeces:
By observing the color of the stools incase of blood mixed we can differentiate between large and small intestine diarrhoea and also by observing number of times the animal is discharging stools.
Incase of small intestine diarrhoea the stools are of tarry coloured and in large in large intestine diarrhoea it may be of reddish in colour.
Incase of small intestine diarrhoea there will be increased volume, number of times release of stools by the dog Whereas incase of large intestine diarrhoea there is decrease in volume of release but increase in number of times of defecation with straining in dogs and is often mixed with mucus.
Diagnosis & treatment :
Regular deworming of the dogs in monthly intervals upto 6 months thereafter 3 months interval in order to prevent worm infections.
Providing regular vaccination to the dogs with starting at 6 weeks of age with DHPPI+L in order to prevent bacterial and viral infections.
Avoiding stress foods, other damaged, garbage food to the animal.
Preventing animal becoming obese which invites early kidney and liver diseases and also providing regular exercise. Incase of liver and kidney dysfunction go with liver tonics ( Liv52) and kidney syrups.
Incase of bacterial and viral infections go with broad spectrum antibiotics along with supportive therapy ( fluids, vitamins and electrolytes).
