Care for pregnant - whelping dog

Dietary measures :

Female is to be fed with high quality food with enough nutrients and as few fillers as possible. The bitch is to be fed with high quantity of food as more food is required for growth of babies as well. Due to very shot gestation period and development of large number of puppies a quality high nutritious feed is most important. The food is to be given in less amount for longer period. The food is to given with increasing 10% for every week from 6th week.

Exercise :

The animal walks normally during the 1st 3 weeks and there after take the dog for 10 minutes walk. Exercise is very much important for dog as it helps the dog for normal whelping and care for pups.

Preparing for birth:the s

Roughly 2 weeks before the date of whelping you should start taking the rectal temperature of the dam, this will helps to determine the date of whelping. The dams temperature will start to fall within 24 hours before the start of leighbour begins. Install a welping box atleast 2 weeks before the date of whelping to make sure to adjust the animal for whelping box. Cover the box beneath and sides with blanket.

Whelping :

Get a pair of latex gloves for the event that you need tossist birth ( incase if bitch get half pup out, if you need to pull  a little if it persists for long.)
Warm water to wash the dams rear after all of the puppies are born.
Some string and scissor (incase dam doesn't bite the umbilical cord right, if isn't removed)
If the bitch doesn't removed the sac pull it away from the face. If the bitch doesn't stimulate the puppies to breathe rub the puppies with old cloth.

Care after welping :

Immediately after giving birth by the bitch offer some luke worm water and milk to the bitch. Get a old washed cloth to clean rear and body of the bitch. Keep the lighting dim in the rooms as the pups eyes aren't yet fully developed and the full light may be drastic to them. There won't be any immediate change in the food immediately after whelping. Make sure that every 2 hours pups should be allowed for 5 minutes feeding.
